Surface Tension 2007
Diploma Unit 11, Bartlett School of Architecture, UCL

The unit will propose architecture that responds to Rome's cultural identity and which acknowledges the souvenirs and artefacts of the city. However, it is our role to devise an architecture that can 'pioneer' its place within this landscape of history and symbolism. For us there can be no sentimentality bestowed by the authentication of Time. The unit will add to the city's history of growth and decay, of occupation, desertion, salvage and resurgence. The practice of spolia will be a guide. Rather than taking the Roman columns of Antiquity as footings, as was the habit of mediaeval builders, we will find alternatives, maybe redundant or unappreciated elements of the cityscape from which to spring new and adaptive architectural interventions.
