22nd Century Post-Glacial Landscapes
How may post-glacial moraine landscapes formed by the retreat of the Miage Glacier in the Italian Valle d’Aosta produce new modes of alpine inhabitation that acknowledge environmental instability, human precarity, rather than control or permanence?
The project proposes a climate-driven test station within the volatile post-glacial moraine landscapes of the Miage Glacier. It responds directly to climatological models predicting exponential glacial retreat and its effects on the quality of life in the Aosta Valley. The design envisions a ‘move with nature’, ascending alongside the shifting tree and snow lines toward the remaining ice. At higher altitudes, an eco-precarial ablation control forms a post-glacial valley by planting coniferous trees, integrating water and residual ice flows, and preserving alpine culture in the valleys below.
