The Mycelium Paradigm: Spatial Dispositions for Industrial Catatonia
How might abandoned subterranean infrastructures be reconstituted as productive environmental ecologies capable of mediating between industrial heritage, material cultivation and urban metabolism?
Situated within Turin’s fragmented subterranean landscapes, the project investigates the latent capacities embedded within the city’s abandoned underground infrastructures. Emerging from twentieth century industrial expansion, these spaces persist as territories suspended between heritage, obsolescence and future occupation. Guided by the organisational logics of fungal ecologies, the proposal establishes a productive environmental framework centred on cultivation, material transformation and ecological exchange. A reflective environmental apparatus mediates the distribution of light, air, humidity and thermal energy, generating a series of controlled climatic environments beneath the city. The project repositions the underground as an active participant within Turin’s urban metabolism.
