Flora & Fantasy: The Birth of a 4th Rome Flora and fantasy, looks at the emergence of a 4th Rome, in response to previous iterations of the Eternal City, taking elements from the city’s foundation under Romulus and Remus, the grandeur of the empires and its role in a newly unified Italy. This 4th Rome seeks to approach the issues and ambitions of a metropolis that faces a balancing act between the fetishisation and monetisation of its past and a much-needed response to its modern problems, namely overtourism and climate change.
The 4th Rome proposes a new reality that honours both the culture and nature of the city, with a return to the pivotal role of agriculture in society, utilising historic urban planning principles, vernacular materialities and the fantasy of Roman Capricci. The aim, to create a prototype for the city’s progression and reinvention in response to the issues it faces, by providing a sustainable food source, community space and engagement, and an alternative to the overcrowded city centre.
