Zero Waste Ortigia. In recent five years, the Region of Sicily has been undergoing a serious waste management crisis, which is having devastating health, social and environmental impact and causing significant damage to the island's tourism sector. In response to the unlawful management of waste and the overloading of the waste disposal system, the programme directly utilizes the recycled waste as key building components, creating a multi-functional waste centre in Ortigia Island and reducing the amount of trash ending up in the landfills or oceans.

Besides a plant disposing of the sorted waste, the centre contains more space encouraging public participation to the recycling process such as waste material workshop and self-collection spot. Adapted to the road conditions on the island, donkeys carrying new facilities to replace small trucks to collect waste. A donkey care room in the waste centre provides resting space and services for these lovely 'organic machines'. Waste is not a stain of this island, the waste centre is a witness and display, becoming a community centre in the future.
