How can inhabitation as a spatial practice be used to re-examine perceived spaces of lack?
The de-industrialisation of Turin has become intertwined with the dissolution of a shared working class identity, resulting in a perceived destruction of community. However, the notion of ‘community’ is misleading, especially within heterogeneous neighbourhoods like Barriera di Milano. A closer look at the Barriera presents an alternative spatial logic, such that spaces are denoted by the assemblage of ad-hoc urban provisions, forming a subversive system of architecture that prioritises inhabitation as spatial practice. The assemblage becomes a spectacle of inhabitation, revealing the everyday intricacies and negotiations that occur on the ground, which are always present but often overlooked.
